A Chicago Residence

One half of an 1890’s two-flat duplex is the site of a simple interplay between three elements: dormer, roof windows, and roof hatch - with a green roof as the focal point.
Sheltered from the noise and the heat of the city and afforded some privacy by the pitched roof to the south, the swaying grasses and small shrubs of the vegetated roof will become an oasis for the house, visible through a dormer with a new operable window (currently covered) and roof windows inserted into a dark bedroom.
A glazed operable hatch floating in a sea of green will provide roof access and help illuminate the dim upper floor at the north.
