Selected Music 1994-2004

Distancia (2002) is an improvisation on solo violin with effects. The recent purchase of an acoustic pickup and a delay pedal for the violin led to an improvised exploration of the possibilities of amplifying a small, acoustic instrument in terms of depth of tone and suspension of sound independent of physical space.

4991 (2002) is a remix of a portion of 1994, a piece for solo piano recorded during that year. Using audio manipulation software for the first time, the inversion of the legato melodic passages yielded a bright shifting of tonalities in striking contrast to the swells of the inverted chords.

Insects (2002) is a remix of a 2000 solo piano piece originally used for a compilation of ghost story recordings. Other than reversing, no effects were added to or subtracted from this piece.

Petit Funk and Marche Funebre (2002) is a composition for MIDI brass ensemble, likely a result of a late night at the Green Mill followed by a long, draggy trip home in the cold.

Divergence for Chorus (2002) is a composition for chorus arranged for MIDI. The entries of the voices are staggered, and once all voices are present, one voice introduces a new pitch, to which the other voices react with contrasting pitches.

Short Elegy with Tremolo (2004) is a composition for multi-tracked violin with effects, assembled with GarageBand. A shivering tremolo introduces the piece, giving way to keening, panned echoes pitted against elegiac sustained tones.

Approaching Horizon (2004) is an improvisation for multi-tracked violin with MIDI percussion. Flourishes of triangle, bells, and shakers surround strummed violin chords run through effects in GarageBand. The bassline is even generated by violin.
