VT Solar Home 2005

What the heck? Is that some kinda crazy mobile home they’re moving?
Sort of.

My alma mater, Virginia Tech, is angling for the top seat in the 2005 Solar Decathlon, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, and held on the Mall in Washington, D.C. from October 6-14, 2005.

Set on a steel chassis to facilitate transportation by a rig (see above photo), the house is comprised of two cores housing mechanical systems, bathrooms, appliances, and storage spaces bounded by highly insulated walls with a continuous clerestory, covered by a distinctive roof, which directs breezes, light, and collects rainwater and solar energy.
