Echo Studio food-producing roof

What are these people in yellow doing?
It doesn’t look like much, but this is Step 3 of 7 in building a low-tech, high-yield prototype food-producing roof module that Urban Habitat Chicago (UHC.) will be used for the True Nature Foods Rooftop Victory Gardens.
A system such as this will insulate and help moderate temperatures in spaces below, reduce the urban heat island effect, absorb and filter rainwater, attract beneficial insects, and best of all… produce food for less than $10 per square foot.

Closeup of zucchini, at left, and tomatoes, right
Harvested zucchini. 10 inches long, 3 inches in diameter. Future application: zucchini fritters… mmm!
The photos don’t include the many meals we’ve had of pesto pasta with basil and tomatoes harvested from the roof.
