De Young Museum
Southeast corner with tower at right
The new De Young Museum by Swiss architecture firm Herzog and de Meuron opened this weekend in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park.
Dappled patterns of light and shadow animate perforated exterior copper cladding while glass ‘terraria’ extend landscape architect Walter Hood’s vision of the site’s geological and biological history to the interior.
Yours truly and girlfriend Ellen managed to find their way in and up to the overlook tower, a unique form that twists as it rises and which provides striking views of San Francisco and the bay.
