Jan Svankmajer has produced a fascinating body of films using techniques ranging from stop-motion animation to live action. Allied with the Surrealists during the 1960’s, short films include a wholly original interpretation of musical form in “J.S. Bach: Fantasia in G Minor” (1965) and a striking use of puppetry (and guinea pig) in “Punch and Judy” (1966).

While the early films are visually compelling, they would be unimaginable without the sound and music of Zdenek Liska, whose catalog of available recordings seems woefully inadequate.
