Think your apartment is small?

Author J.G. Ballard has envisioned a not-so-distant future where the planet’s population has soared to twenty thousand million and each person is allotted no more than five square meters of living space in his short story “Billennium.”

Since space is measured by ceiling area, unscrupulous landlords find that angling the tops of walls out helps them save floor area.

With new code revisions decreasing the allowable from five to three square meters, enough only for a bed and an outswinging door, it’s enough to drive anyone crazy.
