Big and small to move water and air
Why should we care about how we heat, cool, and flush?
The transfer of large quantities of energy to change the temperature of water and air to suit our needs contributes to global warming, wastes valuable resources and, frankly, is often a poor application of technology both new and old.
Geothermal heat pumps and exchange systems use the stable temperature of the Earth to move heat to or from a building. The Takagi tankless water heater heater controls water temperature on demand rather than keeping a big tank of it heated and insulated. Falcon Waterfree Technologies uses a sealant liquid to let urine fall by gravity down a sanitary line while sealing off odors. Not to mention greywater use (more on this later).
Simple technology which uses basic physics to waste less can be beautiful (but often overlooked).
