Atomic legacy

Kaboom

In J.G. Ballard’s short story “The Terminal Beach”, the striking name ‘Eniwetok’ crops up several times. Held by the Japanese through World War II and taken by the U.S. in 1944 during the Pacific campaign, Eniwetok atoll was subsequently used for atomic and hydrogen bomb testing until 1962.

The story, is mesmerizing, enigmatic, and incidentally, one of the few examples I can find of an effective, compelling latter day ghost story that does not rely on traditional settings or conventions.
