Aga Khan Award for Architecture
The Aga Khan Award for Architecture 2004 has been published and among the winners is a simple, elegant primary school in Burkina Faso that is a model of community initiative and good design response to tradtion, material, and climatic conditions.
The Award, established by a noted Muslim leader, seeks to “enhance the understanding and appreciation of Islamic culture as expressed through architecture” which
“…not only provides for people’s physical, social, and economic needs, but that also stimulates and responds to their cultural and spiritual expectations. Particular attention is given to building schemes that use local resources and appropriate technology in an innovative way, and to projects likely to inspire similar efforts elsewhere.”
